MAORI (New Zealand) Trolling Fish Hook
CIRCA 1850 - 1880

The Maori (Matau) fish hooks were made from
a variety of materials depending
on the type of fish you wanted to catch.  They
were made from bone, shell, stone & wood.
While early European explorers considered
these fish hooks to be "ill made" and of
"doubtful efficacy" research has shown that the
design was highly effective.

The hook offered for sale here ( approx 2 1/2"
long) is made of abalone shell with a hand
carved tortoise shell hook.  The fibers used to
complete the hook are natural to
the area of origin.

This exact hook can be found in the Museum of
New Zealand.  A solid investment piece
of 18th and 19th Century angling history!
